The International Effort to Combat Global Climate Change and Its Implications to the U.S. Building Performance Industry
Presenter: David Van Winkle, North Texas Sierra Club
Conference Center Room C
The international concern over global climate change is growing. The Kyoto Accord has been ratified and the rest of industrialized world outside of the US and Australia have begun implementing the agreement. What will be the U.S. response to this challenge? What can the building performance industry do on a voluntary basis? These issues will be addressed by David Van Winkle is a North Texas Sierra Club leader who represented the Club at the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Montreal.

Affordable Passive Solar Homes

Topics on passive solar homes include economics, design strategies, and a feasibility study for mixed climates. This is the one session that you can't "afford" to miss!

Break Out Session 9
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.

National Comfort Institute's Airflow Measurement Training
Moderator: Don Tippit, Energy Smart
Presenter: Rob Falke, National Comfort Institute
Cavalier Room
Airflow is the life blood of HVAC system performance and efficiency but it can be difficult and challenging to accurately measure without practical training and field experience. As the conference theme "embracing the future" indicates, airflow measurement is a practice and skill that is increasingly required of raters. This trend is bound to continue in the future. NCI installed HVAC system efficiency rating methods are documenting that 13 SEER systems often only deliver effective SEER of 6 to 8 in the field. Where is the energy efficiency our industries have promised our consumers? Rob Falke, President of National Comfort Institute will conduct this session where you will see air measurement instruments being used and learn proven procedures necessary to obtain repeatable and trustworthy airflow readings. Learn the basics steps critical to effective testing with an air balancing hood and other air measurement instruments. Gain insight on the weaknesses of HVAC system pressurization testing and obtain an appreciation of the century old trade of air balancing used today to measure and rate installed HVAC system performance.

Moderator: Mark Curry, Energy Sense
Presenters:
Kathy Howard, Energy Sense
Mark Jansen, Energy Efficient Homes Midwest
Galo LeBron, Energy Inspectors

Conference Center Room B
Working with production builders presents special challenges to raters. The rater must sequence the inspection and testing process to meet the demanding production scheduling. This session will offer leaders in the field explaining how they present their services to the production builder, and meet the special needs of the production builder while being profitable in a very competitive environment.

Award Winning Performance - Case Studies of the 2005 RESNET Rating Industry Leadership Awards

Michael Holtz, Architectural Energy Corporation
Lee O'Neal, NSpects
Steve Saunders, Tempo Air

Conference Center Room D
Where do some of the leading people in the residential energy efficiency field think the HERS industry will be 5 years from now and what new opportunities will exist? How about in 10 years? Would it surprise you to know that many of those opportunities exist today? Come learn how the future is right here, right now.

Changes to the BPI Certification and Accreditation Models
Moderator: Megan Edmunds, E-Star Colorado
Presenters:
William Parlapiano III, Building Performance Institute
Larry Zarker, Building Performance Institute

Primavera Room
The Building Performance Institute (BPI) promotes excellence in the contracting trades by establishing standards of performance for technicians and providing certifications for qualified contractors. BPI contractors use a "whole house" approach to create energy efficient, durable buildings that are both comfortable and safe for the people who occupy them. BPI has entered into a partnership with RESNET to involve home energy raters in their program. This session will explain the BPI/RESNET partnership and its implications to the rating industry. It will also explain the changes in the program's contractor certification and accreditation models.

Europe's Approach to Global Climate Change and Building Performance
Moderator: David Goldstein, Natural Resources Defense Council
Presenters:
Steve Baden, RESNET
Philip Fairey, Florida Solar Energy Center

Las Manitas Room
The European Union (EU) has targeted building energy performance as a major component of meeting its obligations under the Kyoto Climate Accord. The EU has enacted legislation, "The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive" that member states must enact requirements for rating buildings at time of sale or change of occupancy. This action has a dramatic potential impact on setting up a protocol for carbon reduction trading and building energy savings. Clearly there are advantages to developing a dialogue between the U.S. and the Europe on building performance and energy ratings. The RESNET Board adopted the development of such a dialogue as one of the top priorities for RESNET for 2005. In September, Philip Fairey and Steve Baden participated in the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive Conference and met with the International Energy Agency. A solid foundation has been laid as a basis for an ongoing dialogue with the EU on building performance and energy ratings. This session will present an overview of the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, the potential of cooperation between the U.S. and EU on home energy ratings and building performance, and what impacts this could have on the U.S. building performance industry.
